FRCR Part 2B Exam

The FRCR Part 2B Exam is the final stage of the FRCR qualification, focusing on practical radiological skills. It includes Long Cases, Rapid Reporting, Oral Exam, Testing Diagnostic Accuracy and Clinical Reasoning under real-world conditions. Clearing Part 2B completes the pathway towards becoming a qualified radiologist.

Exam Requirements

To qualify for the FRCR Part 2B Exam, candidates must have successfully cleared Part 2A and completed a minimum of 34 months training in clinical radiology. This experience ensures that they possess the necessary practical skills and diagnostic expertise for advanced practice.

Exam Format

Oral Assessment, Long Case Reporting & Short Case Reporting

Each component has its own set pass mark, and candidates must meet the standard in all three to pass overall, with limited allowance for borderline scores

Rapid Reporting

  • Format: Computer-based, timed assessment.
  • Content: Candidates are presented with a series of radiological images (primarily plain radiographs) and must quickly identify normal and abnormal findings.
  • Time duration: Approximately 30 minutes.

Reporting Session

  • Format: Computer-based, timed assessment.
  • Content: Candidates are presented with fewer, more complex radiological cases. They are required to provide detailed written reports, including:
    • Identifying key findings
    • Describing the underlying pathology
    • Suggesting a differential diagnosis
    • Recommending further investigations
  • Time duration: Approximately 60 minutes.

Oral Examination (Viva):

  • Exam Structure: Two stations – 6 cases per station (12 cases total)
  • Time Duration: 2 × 30-minute viva stations
  • Areas covered: Image Interpretation, Diagnosis & Differential Diagnosis, Clinical Relevance, Management & Next Steps, Safety & Pitfalls.
