MRCPCH Clinical Exam

The final stage of the MRCPCH is a practical, hands-on exam that evaluates essential skills in paediatric medicine. In this face-to-face assessment, candidates are tested on key competencies like communication, clinical examination, diagnosis, and patient management, ensuring they are well-prepared for paediatric practice.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the MRCPCH Clinical Exam, candidates must have successfully passed the Foundation of Practice (FOP), Theory and Science (TAS), and Applied Knowledge in Practice (AKP) exams.

Candidates must pass the Clinical exam within 7 years of completing their final theory exam (FOP/TAS or AKP). Those exceeding this timeframe should contact the exam team.

Exam Format

The exam includes a total of 10 stations, divided into core and speciality skill areas, each lasting approximately 9-10 minutes:

Short Clinical Stations
(4 stations)

In these stations, you’ll examine real paediatric patients, showcasing your abilities in history taking, physical examination, and clinical decision-making.

Communication Stations
(2 stations)

These stations assess your communication skills, including breaking bad news, counselling parents, and discussing sensitive topics.

Development Station
(1 station)

This station presents a developmental scenario where you’ll assess a child’s development, pinpoint any concerns, and create a management plan.

History Station
(1 station)

You’ll take a detailed history from a simulated patient or parent, focusing on relevant medical, social, and developmental information.

Video Stations
(2 stations)

You’ll watch video clips of clinical scenarios and be asked to analyze the situation, identify problems, and suggest appropriate interventions.

Scoring and Assessment

Each station in the MRCPCH Clinical Exam is scored using standardized criteria that focus on key areas: clinical competence, communication, professionalism, and practical skills. Candidates are graded on their accuracy in performing tasks, effectiveness in communicating with patients and families, and ability to demonstrate clinical reasoning and problem-solving.
