MRCS Part A Exam
The MRCS Part A is a written exam that evaluates candidates’ knowledge in surgical principles and applied basic sciences. It consists of multiple-choice questions covering anatomy, physiology, pathology, and patient care. Part A tests the essential theoretical knowledge needed for surgical practice.
Exam Requirements
To be eligible for the MRCS Part A exam, candidates must hold a recognized medical degree and should have completed at least 12 months of postgraduate clinical experience. This ensures that the candidate has necessary surgical and clinical foundation before attempting the exam.
Exam Format
Paper 1: Applied Basic Sciences
- Duration: 3 hours
- Questions: 180 Single Best Answer (SBA) Questions – Multiple Choice Exam
- Focus Areas: Anatomy, physiology, and pathology, including relevant applied basic sciences related to surgical practice.
Paper 2: Principles of Surgery-in-General
- Duration: 2 hours
- Questions: 120 Single Best Answer (SBA) Questions – Multiple Choice Exam
- Focus Areas: Clinical application of surgical principles, including pre and post-operative care, trauma management, surgical skills, and critical care.
